High school reunion - Provence Marinaside

I can't believe September is almost coming to an end!!
Time surely flies and, no, I am not at all ready for my journey to Cambridge!
Perhaps a little more Vancouver seafood will calm my nerve...
so there I went to the Provence Marinaside :)

I haven't heard much about this place other than its pricy price tag, so off we went!
whole crab - $41 - 5/5
I ordered a whole crab - steamed with beurre blanc sauce.

OMG.

The crab was incredibly meaty and sweet.  It tasted great with the beurre blanc sauce and although priced at $42, I do believe that it is quite reasonable for a restaurant located at yaletown harbour front.

I do believe that the condition of the crabs are seasonal tho so - be careful when you go in I guess...

Grilled Whole lobster with beurre blanc sauce - $37 -  4/5
I didn't try this personally but according to my friends who've tried it, it was plump and sweet.  The meat was firm, indicating its freshness and yea, what more can I say? it was pretty awesome!!

You can also have it steamed or sautéed (same with the crab, but crab can't be grilled)

overall we had a great time there at Provence.  Although I wouldn't recommend their antipasti so much (esp the ones from the show windows)but their seafood is definitely of high quality and if I were ever back in Van again I wouldn't hesitant to give them a try over The Keg's crab dinner!!

food - 4/5 - antipasti were not good...
Service - 4/5 - attentive server; quite knowledgable as well
Ambiance - 5/5 - date night <3 although a tad noisy, you still get the awesome view of granville island from seawall!!

Market by Jean-Georges at Shangri-la hotel Vancouver - Great patio!!

It was supposed to be a girl's night out but... we had several guys joining us for the night :)
We wanted a nice patio for these hot summer nights, so I arranged us to meet at the Market by Jean Georges at Shangri-la hotel.
I had a great experience at the restaurant's patio, so I recommended the place and everyone agreed!

Off we went!

We had 7 people so it was a little hard arranging for us at the patio as the patio seats were first come, first served.  So we actually had to wait for quite a bit for our tables to be ready....

At least the complimentary rosemary dusted popcorn was quite tasty!

When we were seated, we were presented  with the full menu.

Judy went for the watermelon and goat cheese salad and the truffle, fontina cheese pizza.

Watermelon and goat cheese - $10 - 3/5
Truffle, fontina cheese pizza - $19 - 3.5/5

Judy enjoyed the watermelon, goat cheese appy quite a bit.  She thought it was creamy yet refreshing with the use of the watermelon.  I felt that the watermelon was too warm and not sweet enough - hence the entire dish became a little too sour and bland.  The goat cheese tho was really creamy with just the right amount of gaminess.

Only if the watermelon was a tad colder (and sweeter!!)

Overall, it was a good balance between creaminess and refreshing, grassy taste of the watermelon.

The black truffle, fontina cheese pizza with a tad of fricassee and chives topped was a good pizza.  I got a tiny hit of truffle scent which was perfect because it wasn't too strong.  However, the truffle paste felt like the truffle paste I have once purchased from one of the "eat Vancouver" event - which is a bit disappointing.  I know how much I have paid for that entire jar of truffle paste........
Though, the pizza had a great, well balanced taste.
don't you just hate it when the truffle oil really over powers?

Tuna tartare - $16 - avocado, spicy ginger relish dressing
Jenny and I shared a Tuna Tartare and a steamed shrimp salad ($18 - no picture...)

I had these two dishes last time I visited them and they were simply amazing!

I had to recommend them to my friends so... we got the two to share :)

The Tuna tartare was refreshing with the spicy la-yu oil providing a great kick and the ginger dressing cutting through the richness of the tuna.  I liked the tanginess from (perhaps ponzu?) some sort of citrusy dressing.  It really brightened things up a lot! The avocado beneath the tuna tartare provided another layer of creaminess to the already creamy tuna tartare that when you place the entire thing into your mouth, it is an explosion of flavours with a perfect  balance of creaminess, tartness, spice, and savoury.

Loved it!!

The steamed shrimp salad with Champagne dressing was another stunning dish.  The dressing was a great balance between sweet. savoury, and tang.  I loved how they placed arugla together with shiso leaves and mint.
Every bite was like a little surprise of flavour burst in your mouth because it wasn't your usual combination of the greens.

ahhh - so heavenly!!

cheesecake - N/A
Siny decided to order  a dessert instead of an appie or a meal.  She opted for a cheesecake.
According to her, it was creamy and well balanced.

She enjoyed it!

Over all, our experience at Market was pretty good.  We loved the patio and courteous service.  Though the price was to the higher side, it was still well worth the trip if you were looking for a fun evening with courteous service.

Food - 3.5/5 - I really did not enjoy their main dishes last time, so make sure that you stick to the appies instead.
Service - 4.5/5 - impeccable! Always courteous just like their hotel service!
Ambiance - 5/5 - we LOVED the patio!! Though the inside is also really nice!

2005 Yiron Galilee from Israel - $$?
2005 Yiron Galilee from Israel - $$?
2005 Yiron Galilee from Israel - $$?
2005 Yiron Galilee from Israel - $$?

Gosh this was a tasty wine!!  I just randomly found it in Jordan's collection (he hates wine... :$ so I am doing him a favour.....)
Anyhow, I have no idea where this was from or why he has this and I just randomly picked it up and opened it.... The first glass tho wasn't so great because I didn't aerate it enough so the flavour was really harsh with really strong hints of barrel (oak?) flavour and it was actually quite unpleasant.
The second day when I had my second glass...

Oh My God, it was SO good.

Hints of cherry wood with a touch of oak barrel in the background; with predominantly the flavours of berries and some vanilla; it was unexpectedly fruity and surprisingly with minimal tannin (unlike many aged wines!!)  I love it........... and I feel terrible finishing the bottle all on my own!

Keep my fingers crossed that Jordan will not find out :$

Dinner at Glowbal Satay and Grills - an make up valentine dinner :)

Being our 8th valentines day spent together, Jordan and I (more like my sole decision since Jordan was only notified last minute aka night of 13th) have decided not to mingle with the rest of the couples on the day of Valentine's because, well, first of all, it is going to be very crowded (and I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate crowd) and second, it is just not that cost efficient.  As you might have already noticed, the places that offer valentine "specials" are usually at premium prices.  Hey, I am willing to spend money when it comes to tasty food; but I am not willing to pay for "the occasion" (okay, most of the times, of course)  Much like the Xmas eve dinner or the New Year's eve dinners served at restaurants, Valentine's day dinner special is another meal special that I'd like to avoid at all cost.

Since I have been craving for a really good piece of steak, I chose Glowbal satay and Grills for our Valentine's destination.  Okay, I know I know... I am NOT out of my mind and I am well aware of the ratings of Glowbal group.  But I really didn't want to settle with somewhere safe like Gotham's!  It would be so much more exciting to have a nice meal at a place that carries a mixed, bipolar reviews than a place with a lot of hype and a lot of mediocre to positive reviews, right?  I even thought about trying black+blue.... just because they carry some really nice meats but eventually got scared off by their really, REALLY negative reviews on urbanspoon.. but anyway

Satay appitizers from front - lamb shish kebob, kobe meatballs, and braised short rib, served with thai slaw and two sauces (ginger white soy and chinese mustard) - sorry for the blurry picture

Another photo of the appetizer plate without the flash - I am so sorry for the photo quality as the place was quite dark

We didn't order much appetizers because we knew from the beginning that it was going to be a heavier meal (lots of good tasty protein + fat!) so we started with their famous kobe beef meatballs with tomato fondue, a lamb shish kebab and braised beef short rib with truffle aioli. Of course the latter two were simply because I like lamb and beef short ribs :D

First thing on the appetizers - I should have ordered 2 orders each of the shish kebobs and short ribs because they were really tiny!  I basically had a bite of each of the lamb shish kebob and short ribs so I cannot guarantee the accuracy of my reviews but here is how I thought abut them:
lamb shish kebob: very nicely seasoned with a hint of cumin.  The yogurt sauce on the top was quite nice not only being the factor that holds all the flavours together but also cut through some of the greasiness from the lamb.  The kebob was not gamy at all and the meat was fairly tender although leaning towards "dry".  I liked the charring a lot and my only complaint is that it was a little too small.... I am sure it would have tasted way better with the sauces provided (chinese mustard!)

Kobe beef meatballs with tomato fondue - Okay, you can't exactly call it a fondue if the cheese base is not exactly carefully blended with different types of cheeses and wines... just like you can't call a hotpot a "hotpot" if all they use for the soup base is water!  That was the case here - what you call a tomato fondue, it was merely a tomato sauce topped with some firm cheese (Asiago or parmesan? I am so sorry I can't seem to recall....)  The meatballs were excellent!  One of the juiciest and meatiest I have ever tasted in Van :)  It was nicely flavored too, just enough salt to taste the natural sweetness from the meats.  The tomato + cheese sauce didn't overwhelm the flavour of the meatballs but rather, added another layer of depth (perhaps from the cheese?) to the meatball.  Jordan particularly enjoyed this dish and he even mentioned that he'd come back for it and order 10 of the meatballs instead of a steak.... I guess it is a better deal at $32.50 for 10 meatballs than an 8oz tenderloin steak... haha,,, :P

The braised short ribs - they were just average braised short ribs.  I couldn't detect much truffle in the aioli (which, btw I should have picked up since truffles should be pungent.)  The meat was a bit stringy but, what can I expect at the size of that short ribs?

My drink - Whistler honey lager - also arrived together with the appetizers.  I liked it!!  I think I am falling in love with the BC honey lager brew!! although i was never a big fan of beer but... these two has gotten me hooked!!

24oz porter house!! - $49.95

10oz Tenderloin - $36.95
I wanted something tender and juicy so I asked our waiter what his recommendations were and how he'd recommend to cook the meat but he simply recommended the tenderloin at medium rare.  I don't know.  Call me nit picking.  I didn't like how he recommended something so, "safe" and "predictable".  I felt bad turning down his recommendation so I ordered as he recommended and wondered if rare was or was not an option.... anyway... Both of our steaks came out on a piece of wooden chopping board, I really liked the presentation especially with our large chunks of meats!  It added that primitive feel to an otherwise elegant dining ambiance.  What can I say?  I am a sucker for gaps!!  I got exactly what I was expecting (medium rare) and it was surely tender and juicy!  So juicy that in fact, a lot of the juice leaked through my cutting board on to the paper table cloth underneath (wait, does that mean my meat wasn't actually rested well enough? anyone?)
However, picking tenderloin means sacrificing the meat flavour to trade for tenderness and that was exactly the case with my steak.  After I had a bite of Jordan's porterhouse cut - it became evident that his steak was a lot more flavourful than mine!  If you are a fan of the huge beefy flavour (slight sweetness and creeminess from the fat and that tiny bit of gaminess distinctive to beef) and you don't mind a bit of chewing then I'd totally recommend the striploin or T-bone or porterhouse over tenderloin or filet mignon!
Because my steak was not very flavourful, I really got to test out the sauces.  I was very surprised with hollandaise sauce as I am more accustomed to see hollandaise on eggsbenny... breakfast items or just on eggs!!  So imagine my surprise when I found out that the two actually worked together!  The creamy and buttery hollandaise sauce was perfect for a piece of tenderloin that lacks fat.  Loved it!  As for my second favourite, it was the chimichurri sauce.  I didn't even bother trying the bbq sauce but now I am regretting!! The horseradish sauce was my least favourite as it really just overpowered my tender and delicate tasting tenderloin.

Jordan's porterhouse was really flavvourful and when he asked for rare, well, only the strip loin side was rare... the tenderloin was (as expected) a bit overdone at medium rare. Both sides tho however were very flavourful and even his tenderloin tasted better than mine!! (I guess mine must have been the filet mignon cut or somewhere close to that, anyway)  He noted that he really enjoyed his steak.  But when I tried his, I came across a huge chunk of connective tissue that was really tough.  I am sorry to ruin everyone's appetite here but I had to spit out the chunk because it was just impossible to chew.  Otherwise it was a flavourful piece of steak that we both enjoyed :)

The sides:
poutine + 4 sauces for the steaks - chimichurri sauce, hollandaise sauce, bbq sauce and a horseradish sauce
brussel sprouts - $6.50 - capers, lemon, parmasan
The two sides we ordered were really delicious!  I really enjoyed the brussel sprouts as that nuttiness from brussel sprouts and the burnt flavour really worked together!  The crispy texture worked perfectly with the creamy, tart, and nutty flavour along with the bitterness that came from the burnt pieces.  I somehow had a feeling that this dish came from an accidental failure dish where the chef was maybe preparing for a roasted brussel sprouts and ended up over roasting it but realized that the burnt brussel sprouts actually tasted fantastic with the burnt and decided to keep it!! hmm my overly imaginative imaginations... lol :P

Our second side dish was a simple poutine.  I really liked it because first of all, they kept their promise and used the real cheese curds; and second, the gravy (I believe it was chicken gravy?) was highly enjoyable with a prominent umami and a bit of sweetness coming from chicken fat.  The gravy was so good that I don't even remember how the fries actually tasted like... I am pretty sure they were nicely fried with a bit of crunch and wasn't too soggy although dumped in gravy!

Over all, Jordan and I enjoyed our meal here and being a carnivor as Jordan is, he had absolutely no complaint with the meal other than that huge vein found in his steak and, although I didn't have much problem with my steak, I just hoped that my waiter could have been a little more knowledgeable and informative.  I just wanted a good piece of steak that's been cooked perfectly!!! anyone with any suggestions.. please leave a msg and let me know! your help is much appreciated!!!!

another photo of porter house - huge!!!! and really flavourful :))
Food - 3.5/5
service - 4/5 - (excellent service from the managers of the restaurant, weird how the servers were only carrying out dishes but minimal services :$)
ambiance - 4/5 - I booked my reservation on opentable with a special request for the maitre D' asking for a quiet table and we were seated at one of the most quiet tables in the restaunrat!  Very impressed with their attention to details and will definitely return for other special occasions!   Maybe next time to their brunch menus as those are what seem to be more popular so far!

08Feb, 2011 - Winterlicious Corner house

Woot.

Yes.  I am determined to post up all the winterlicious I have had, today, 2 (almost 3) months later!!

Corner house!

Please excuse the quality of my picture.. it was dark and I only had my phone :S

It was indeed a little house located in the residential area - and it was found on the corner of a street! \
how charming :)

Some bread and hummus again.  Not impressed with either this time.

House cured Graved lax - it was very standard Graved lax.  Reminded me of the ones I often get at Ikea.  :S
I wish the mustard was a bit more sour - as graved lax can get oily.  Lemon zest would have helped too.  I didn't enjoy this dish very much.

Tina's Grilled tiger shrimps.  She enjoyed it very much!  Maybe I was just bad at picking appies :(  Everyone around me seemed to have ordered grilled shrimp. Arg.
They were ginormous!!!

We both ended up ordering the same entree - Cornish hen with roasted root vegetables.
This, was executed perfectly!
The skin was indeed crackling, while the meat remained really juicy.  I've never had any poultry dish that's marinated so well while still maintaining its texture.  Usually the protein begins to change after some hours of marinade due to the salt but this, was really good!

A close-up.  Hehe.
Tina and I both enjoyed it very much :)

Again, we went for the same dessert :P I know, I know.  We just want what we want!!
Buttermilk panna cotta with berry compote
standard panna cotta.  I love everything milky-puddingy :)

"Flower"-less?

Cute.  lol

oh, one thing to note tho.  We had a rude server.  I guess the night was busy and they had a huge line-up at the front, but I suppose we should still have our right to enjoy our dinner regardless.  I guess some of the comments he made was supposed to be "funny" but when 2 out of 3 people do not find it funny, I guess he is going a little over-board.

Over all, the dinner was alright.  I had higher expectations due to the raging reviews but the only thing that wow-ed me was the entree.

Food: 3/5 stars
Service: 2.5/5 stars
Ambiance: 2.5/5 stars - too squishy - it was literally a house!!!

Winterlicious 2011 - Lunch at Jump

I Love and Hate winterlicious!  Love it because there's more excuses for dining out (esp. the finer dining places) and Hate it because..Ugh my diet plan is always ruined :(
I think I gained another pound or so since I came back from the holidays (on TOP of all the holiday weight I've gained over the holidays)

I think it's time for some damage control....
Treadmill here I come!!!!

So Jump is a sub restaurant that belongs to the O&B group (same owners as the famous Canoe restaurant).  But unfortunately, Canoe is EXTREMELY difficult to book for their any (season)-licious type of events so I opted for Jump because I thought the restaurant owned by the same group of people should execute their food the similar way.  (or at least, not too much worse)

Nice blinds! right?

Well, Yea.
Am I foreshadowing too much?  :P I think by now most of you can probably tell where I am going with this but... you might have a different opinion than mine so...

I really pushed our lunch this time because it was an extremely difficult one to arrange.  Mostly because they open only on weekdays (maybe also sunday?) for lunch and, although the restaurant itself is located within the financial district of DT Toronto (wellington and Yonge) - if you don't work around that area, it's really hard to finish the entire lunch within one hour and get back to work.
Anyhow, I managed to lure Janice and Grant into having this lunch with me, mainly because their lunch menu looked just fabulous! (Actually dinner was not so, and more costly)

The restaurant itself was very energetic and lively; with a very modern decor and a high ceiling (esp. loved the blinds they were using)  But as we were having lunch, I noticed that it was a bit too loud for anything.  We had to yell over the lunch table in order to hear what each other was saying.

Now on to the food.
Janice and I both started with the Canadian Rock Crab Cake.
It came with roasted red pepper sauce and celeriac & carrot slaw.  The crab cake was nicely done.  Not too much binding, lots of crab meat, and very little fishy taste.  However, the sauce and the slaw were both quite bland.
Grant had a Wild Mushroom soup (I forgot to take a picture) - but it was claimed that they did not use any cream or butter, just the mushrooms.  Grant noted that it was flavourless (he had to add more salt to compensate)

Pulled BBQ beef short rib sandwich - :) no comment; but it surely looked delish!!

ta-dah-!! Janice and I both opted for Pan-Seared nova scotia scallop (this is also the reason why I chose this restaurant for lunch - despite all the difficulty in finding people joining me!!!)
But... :( this was a major MAJOR disappointment!!  To be fair, the scallops were fresh - it was sweet and had a bit of that resistance when you bite into it. But the crostini was a disaster (yes, there was a crostini and no I didn't eat it) - it was in the broth.
:S
I really didn't get it.  And it pretty much ruined the dish because it was soggy, and mushy and.. well yea everything but tasty.  The artichoke ad mushroom minestra was also very very bland.
Maybe they were some how running low on their salt supply that day.  Or I guess health conscious people eat less salt these days.  But if the food is less salty, you have to use more herb to compensate!! less salty does not mean the food has to be flavourless....
I felt bad for those little scallops :(

Flour-less chocolate torte <3
need I say more?
but this one was just alright.  Tasted more like a brownie (a little dry.. i wonder if they just left it there for too long? )

Over all, I enjoyed my company at Jump.  We sure had a relaxing lunch (I was worried that the ambiance might be too serious but it was very bright and vibrant, which was great) but the food.. I really can't say that I enjoyed them that much.
From all the other feed backs that I have gotten from other friends of mine, I probably will not go back to try their food.

Price $$$
Food 2.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
ambiance: 4/5 or 2/5 depends on if you are looking for the subtle type or the vibrant type!
